The Pajero 6G74 DOHC 3.5L is a performance-focused engine that runs hotter than the 6G72 it replaced. The crankshaft position sensor sits adjacent to the timing cover and is exposed to consistent heat soak, combined with the vibration loading that comes with off-road driving. This combination causes the internal hall-effect element to fail over time - typically showing up first as a no-start when the engine is warm, clearing once cooled down.

The 6G72 variant fitted to Pajero NH and NJ shows a similar failure mode on a longer timeline. Both engine families share the same sensor body and 3-pin triangular connector, so the same replacement unit covers the entire NH-NJ-NK-NL Pajero range. The Pajero NL with 3.5L engine and the older NH with 3.0L both use MD303649.

How do I test a crankshaft or camshaft position sensor?

Use an OBD2 scanner to check for fault codes P0335 to P0338 (crankshaft) or P0340 to P0349 (camshaft). You can also test the sensor with a multimeter - inductive sensors should show resistance between 200 and 1,000 ohms, while Hall effect sensors require a live voltage test with the engine cranking. Erratic or absent RPM signal on a live data scanner is a strong indicator of sensor failure.

Can a cam or crank sensor fault cause my vehicle to go into limp mode?
