What Does a Stop Light Switch Do?

The stop light switch, also called the brake light switch or brake pedal switch, is mounted on the brake pedal bracket under the dash. When you press the pedal, a spring-loaded plunger releases and the switch turns on the brake lights. On most modern vehicles the same switch also tells the engine computer you are braking, which cancels cruise control, releases the automatic shift lock so you can select a gear, and on push-button start models allows the engine to crank.

Symptoms of a Failing Stop Light Switch

Stop light switches wear out from constant use and heat in the footwell. Common symptoms include:

  • Brake lights not working, or only working with a hard pedal press
  • Brake lights staying on after the car is switched off, flattening the battery
  • Automatic gear selector stuck in Park
  • Cruise control not engaging or cutting out
  • ESC, ABS or traction control warning light on
  • Push-button start not cranking with the brake pressed
  • Fault code P0504 (brake switch A/B correlation) or P0571 (cruise brake switch)

On many Hyundai and Kia models, also check the rubber stopper pad on the brake pedal arm. If it has worn away, the switch plunger sits out of position and the brake lights stay on even with a good switch.

2-Pin or 4-Pin? Choosing the Right Switch

The quickest way to pick the right switch is to count the pins on your old one. 2-pin switches run the brake lights only and suit vehicles without cruise control. 4-pin switches have a second circuit for cruise control, stability control and the engine computer. The same model can use either type depending on its options and build date, so a Hyundai iLoad without cruise takes 93810-2E000 while one with cruise takes 93810-3K000. Later Hyundai and Kia models changed from 93810-3S000 to 93810-3S700 around mid-2013. Every switch in our range is matched to OEM part numbers - use the Vehicle Part Finder or check the part number on your old switch before ordering.
