ABOUT THIS THERMOSTAT

On the G4FJ 1.6 T-GDi the thermostat holds coolant temperature where the ECU expects it for boost and ignition control. Too hot and the knock sensor pulls timing; too cold and the direct-injection engine runs rich and fouls faster.

A thermostat sticking part-closed on a turbo engine stresses the head gasket and turbo bearings, so replacing it early is cheap protection.
