The crankshaft position sensor is an engine management component found on virtually all modern vehicles with internal combustion engines. It monitors the position and rotational speed of the crankshaft and sends the information to the engine control unit so it can make appropriate adjustments based on operating conditions. The crankshaft speed and position are some of the most important parameters used in engine management calculations, and many engines cannot run if the crankshaft position sensor is not providing an accurate signal.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Why does my LS1 stall when it reaches operating temperature?

The 12560228 sensor is prone to heat soak. Internal electrical failure occurs when the engine is hot causing the signal to drop out and the engine to stall. Once cooled it often restarts. Replacing the sensor is the standard fix.

Is this sensor difficult to install?

The sensor is located at the rear of the engine block on the passenger side. You must remove the starter motor to access it. It is held in by a single 10mm bolt.

Does this fit the 5.7L engine in the VZ Commodore?

Yes provided it is the LS1 5.7L engine. Late VZ models transitioned to the 6.0L L76 engine which uses a different sensor. If your engine is the 5.7L LS1 this is the correct part.
