ABOUT THIS SENSOR

The mass airflow sensor on BMW M47 and M57 diesel engines is a hot-film air mass meter mounted between the air filter housing and the intake manifold. It measures the volume and temperature of air entering the engine and transmits this data to the ECU, which uses it to calculate precise fuel injection quantity and timing. The original Bosch part 0928400314 was superseded to 0928400468, then to 0928400527, and Bosch has since transitioned the full line to a new product format (028021808X). All versions are fully interchangeable. The ECU self-adapts to the replacement sensor - typically within 50 to 100km of normal driving. BMW dealer ECU reprogramming is not generally required in practice, though BMW lists it as a recommendation when replacing the 314 variant with the 527.

Can I clean my MAF sensor instead of replacing it?

Yes - if the sensor is contaminated rather than electrically failed, cleaning with a dedicated MAF sensor cleaner spray can restore correct readings. Do not use brake cleaner or generic electrical contact cleaner as these leave residue that damages the sensing wire. Allow the sensor to dry completely before reinstalling. What is the difference between a MAF sensor and a MAP sensor?
