ABOUT THIS SENSOR
The coolant temperature sensor reports engine temperature to the ECU, which uses it to manage fuel injection, ignition timing and cooling fan operation on the Magna/Verada's 4-cylinder and V6 engines.
A common failure mode on the V6 E-Gas models is a stuck-cold reading, which keeps the engine running an enriched mixture and hurts fuel economy.

Can a faulty coolant temperature sensor cause my engine to overheat?
Indirectly yes. If the sensor reports a lower temperature than actual, the ECU may not activate the cooling fan at the correct time, allowing the engine to overheat. Do I need to drain the coolant to replace the sensor?
