A worn rear main crankshaft seal lets engine oil weep past the back of the crankshaft, dropping oil onto the clutch housing or bell housing and often causing a slow oil leak on the driveway or a slipping clutch on manual vehicles. This seal restores the seal between the crankcase and transmission.

ABOUT THIS SEAL

The rear main seal is a radial shaft seal fitted around the crankshaft flange at the transmission end of the engine, sealing the crankcase against oil loss while allowing the crankshaft to rotate freely.

Left unreplaced, a failed seal will continue to leak oil, gradually lowering engine oil level and risking oil contamination of the clutch disc or torque converter, leading to slipping and reduced stopping power on hills for manual vehicles.

COMMON SYMPTOMS OF FAILURE

• Oil spots on the ground under the bell housing area
• Burning oil smell from the rear of the engine
• Low engine oil level with no visible external leak elsewhere
• Clutch slipping or reduced clutch bite in manual vehicles
• Oil residue visible around the flywheel or flexplate on inspection
