ABOUT THIS SEAL

The rear main seal rides on the crankshaft flange at the transmission end of the block, sealing the crankcase while letting the crankshaft spin freely inside it.

A failed seal leaks engine oil onto the clutch or torque converter, cutting engine oil level over time and risking clutch slip or shudder on manual vehicles, or a burning oil smell on automatics.

COMMON SYMPTOMS OF FAILURE

• Oil pooling under the bell housing or transmission bell area
• Dropping oil level with no leak visible at the sump or rocker cover
• Clutch slipping, shuddering, or reduced bite in manual vehicles
• Burning oil smell under load
• Oil misting visible on the flywheel or flexplate when inspected
