BRAND NEW *OEM Quality* engine oil pressure gauge sensor to suit Holden Commodore VE VF, Calais, Caprice and HSV V8 built from 06/2009.

Oil pressure gauge reading erratically, sitting at zero, or pegged high? On the MY09.5 and later Gen4 V8 this is usually the sender rather than the pump. Same-day dispatch before 12pm from Cranbourne VIC.

TO SUIT

This is the later gauge sender fitted from the MY09.5 update onward. It covers Commodore VE and VF SS and SS-V, Berlina, Calais VE and VF, Caprice WM and WN, Statesman WM, and the HSV Clubsport, GTS, Maloo, Senator and Grange in 6.0L L76 L77 and 6.2L LS3. Suits models with an oil pressure gauge in the instrument cluster.

FITMENT CHECK

If your vehicle was built before 06/2009, or has only an oil pressure warning light and no gauge, you need part CPS61 instead. This is the most common ordering mistake on the VE range.

The quickest way to be certain is to look at the plug on your old sensor and compare it to the product images. This sensor has a large round black connector that fills the end of the body. CPS61 has a smaller square terminal block recessed inside a metal collar. Both use an M16 x 1.5 thread, so the thread will not tell them apart.

Some MY09 variants did not change over until 12/2009 or 01/2010. If your build date falls between 06/2009 and 01/2010, compare the connector against the images rather than relying on the date.

ABOUT THIS SENSOR

Unlike the earlier switch-type unit, this sender returns a variable signal so the ECU can drive a real oil pressure gauge as well as the warning light. That is why the MY09.5 cars with the gauge cluster need this specific part.

As the sender ages the internal element drifts, which shows up as a gauge that reads low when hot or swings with engine speed long before any genuine pressure problem exists.

COMMON SYMPTOMS OF FAILURE

  • Oil pressure gauge reading zero or pegged at maximum
  • Gauge needle swinging with engine revs
  • Gauge drops off once the engine reaches operating temperature
  • Oil pressure warning light on with normal actual pressure
  • Check engine light with codes P0520 P0521 or P0523
  • Oil seeping from the sensor connector

What is the difference between an oil pressure sensor and an oil pressure switch?

An oil pressure switch is a simple on/off device that triggers the oil pressure warning light when pressure drops below a fixed threshold. It provides no information about the actual pressure level - just whether it is above or below the activation point. An oil pressure sensor provides a continuous analogue signal to the ECU and instrument cluster, allowing the dashboard to display an actual pressure reading and giving the ECU real-time data for engine management decisions. Many vehicles use both - a switch for the warning light and a sensor for the gauge.

What are the symptoms of a faulty oil pressure sensor or switch?

The most common symptom is a false oil pressure warning light on the dashboard despite the engine having correct oil level and pressure. The light may be on constantly or may flicker particularly at idle when oil pressure is naturally at its lowest. An oil leak from around the sensor or switch body is also a common sign of failure. On vehicles with a pressure gauge rather than just a warning light, a faulty sensor may cause the gauge to read zero, maximum, or erratically.

How do I confirm if the oil pressure warning is a faulty sensor or actual low pressure?

Never assume a warning light is a faulty sensor without checking first. Turn the engine off immediately when the oil pressure light comes on and check the oil level on the dipstick. If oil level is correct, you can verify actual oil pressure by fitting a mechanical oil pressure gauge to the sending unit port and running the engine briefly. A reading within the normal range (typically 200 to 500 kPa at operating temperature and idle) confirms the warning is from a faulty sensor rather than actual low pressure.

Is it safe to continue driving with the oil pressure warning light on?

No - stop the engine as soon as it is safe to do so. An actual low oil pressure condition will cause catastrophic engine damage within minutes of continued running. Even if the fault turns out to be a faulty sensor, you cannot confirm this while driving. Always treat an oil pressure warning light as a critical fault requiring immediate attention until proven otherwise.

How difficult is it to replace an oil pressure sensor or switch?

Most oil pressure sensors and switches are threaded directly into the engine block or oil filter housing and can be replaced with basic tools - a socket or spanner of the correct size and some thread sealant. Allow the engine to cool before removal to avoid burns from hot oil. Have a rag ready to catch the small amount of oil that will spill when the old sensor is removed. The job typically takes 15 to 30 minutes on most vehicles.

Will a faulty oil pressure sensor damage the engine?

The sensor itself does not affect oil pressure or lubrication - it only monitors and reports pressure. A faulty sensor that gives a false low reading may cause unnecessary anxiety but will not damage the engine. However if the sensor gives a false normal reading when actual pressure is low, it will prevent the warning light from alerting you to a real low pressure condition that could cause serious engine damage. This is why verifying actual oil pressure is important before dismissing an oil pressure fault as a sensor issue.
