ABOUT THIS SENSOR

The Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor on Ford Transit TDCi diesel engines measures the volume and density of air entering the intake and sends this data to the PCM to calculate the correct fuel injection quantity for the 2.2L and 2.4L common rail diesel. Fitted as a hot-wire insert-only element into the existing air intake housing via a 4-pin oval connector on a 12V circuit the sensor is a serviceable item that can become contaminated with oil mist from the crankcase breather over time. When the MAF sensor fails or becomes contaminated the Transit PCM defaults to a fixed air mass table causing over-fuelling (black smoke) or under-fuelling (limp mode and flat power) depending on the failure mode.

COMMON SYMPTOMS OF FAILURE

Ford Transit VM diesel vans with a failing MAF sensor commonly enter limp mode at highway speeds and refuse to build boost above around 2500 rpm until the engine is restarted.
