Cylinder Head Temperature (CHT) Sensor measures the actual metal temperature of the engine cylinder head. This provides the ECU with precise, real-time data to prevent catastrophic engine damage from overheating.

How It Works:

The CHT sensor is a vital part of the 'Fail-Safe Cooling' strategy. It screws directly into a 'dry' socket in the cylinder head (not into the coolant jacket). If the engine begins to overheat, even if there is total coolant loss, this sensor alerts the PCM to alternate the firing of cylinders, allowing the engine to air-cool itself and prevent the aluminium head from warping.

Symptoms of a Faulty CHT Sensor:

• Check Engine Light is on (Common codes: P1288, P1289, P1290, P1299).
• The temperature gauge is reading erratically (spiking to Hot or dropping to Cold).
• 'Limp Mode' / Reduced Power: The car feels sluggish as the ECU tries to protect the engine.
• Cooling fans are running constantly at high speed.
