ABOUT THIS SENSOR

The ECT sensor on Suzuki Grand Vitara J20A, J24B, M16A and H27A engines is screwed into the engine block or thermostat housing and sends a continuous temperature signal to the ECU. The ECU uses this reading for fuel injection duration, ignition timing, idle speed control, cold-start enrichment and cooling fan activation.

On higher-mileage Grand Vitaras the sensor can develop drifting resistance over time rather than failing outright, meaning the ECU receives a slightly incorrect temperature reading. This causes fuel and timing maps to be applied incorrectly - often noticeable on cold mornings or when the engine is slow to reach operating temperature on the gauge.
