ABOUT THIS SENSOR

The Coolant Temperature Sensor (CTS) monitors engine coolant temperature and sends a voltage signal back to the ECU. The ECU uses this reading to regulate fuel injection duration, ignition timing, cold start enrichment, idle speed, and cooling fan activation.

When the sensor fails the ECU operates without accurate temperature data - causing rough running, poor fuel economy, and hard cold starts. A failed CTS is a common check engine light trigger on Mazda vehicles of this era.

How do I test a coolant temperature sensor?
