About Your Vehicle's Engine Air Filter

A car's engine air filter acts like the lungs of your vehicle. Its job is to clean the air entering the engine trapping harmful dust dirt sand and other debris. This prevents abrasive particles from causing damage to sensitive internal components like your pistons cylinders and the MAF sensor. A clean air filter is essential for maintaining the correct air-fuel ratio for optimal performance.

  • Engine Protection: A clean filter is the first line of defence against premature engine wear.
  • Optimal Performance: A non-restrictive air filter ensures your engine gets all the air it needs to produce full power.
  • Fuel Efficiency: A clogged filter makes the engine work harder and use more fuel so a clean filter can save you money.
  • Sensor Longevity: It protects the delicate Mass Airflow (MAF) sensor downstream from contamination and damage.

What causes an Air Filter to fail?

An air filter doesn't fail electronically, but it does get clogged over time. Its entire purpose is to trap contaminants from the air. Driving conditions are the biggest factor in its lifespan. Frequent driving on dirt roads in dusty areas or during high-pollen seasons will cause the filter to become clogged much faster.

Common Symptoms of a Failing (Clogged) Air Filter

  • Reduced Acceleration: The engine may feel sluggish or hesitant when you try to accelerate.
  • Decreased Fuel Economy: You might notice you are visiting the petrol station more often.
  • Rough Idle: The engine may idle poorly or inconsistently, especially when stopped.
  • Check Engine Light: A severely clogged filter can disrupt the air-fuel mixture enough to trigger a fault code.
  • Visibly Dirty Filter: The simplest sign is to visually inspect the filter. If it is dark grey or black and full of debris, it is time for a replacement.
